The wine-growing tradition Valdeorras back to Roman times. Under a Mediterranean-oceanic microclimate, the Romans planted vineyards and built wineries. And gave rise to a culture, secular day in the care of the vineyard and the production of exquisite wines, to which pilgrims sang and pilgrims en route to Santiago.
Since that time, the arduous path taken by growers and processors was paying off until in the year 1945, Valdeorras was recognized by Ministerial Order. The Bank was born with the aim of working in the recovery of native varieties such as Godello and Mencia, and its main lines of action of the commitment to quality, boost control, facilitate the promotion and find new ways of expanding and marketing .
Currently, the wine work and the complex world around them is organized through the Regulatory Council, the body that governs the destinies of the PDO, covering the vines of the Municipalities of A Rúa, Carballeda Valdeorras Larouco, O Barco , O Bolo, Petín, Rubiá and Vilamartín.
Production areas occupy much of the basins of the Sil, and Bibei Xares rivers. In them, the climate is drier than the rest of Galicia, the Atlantic influence mixed with continental traits. The average temperature is about 11 º C and the rate of rainfall ranges between 850 and 1,000 mm. annual.
Soils are varied, from the slate, shallow, through the granite, rich in sand, until they settle on sediments and terraces where boulders abound. This diversity of terrain is mainly appreciate two varietal wines. The most emblematic of Godello white, fine aroma is fruity, yellow, gold or straw, and good structure on the palate, with an average alcohol content of 12.5 º. In red highlights made with Mencia, deep purple and elegant fruity, light and tasty aroma, good balance with acidity alcohol, intense and appetizing and long aftertaste.
The varieties of approved breeds are: For whites, preferably Godello, and also Dona Branca and Palomino or Jerez. For red, preferably the Mencia and Sousón but also Brancellao, or Mary Merenzao Ardoña, Negreda Tintorera Grenache, Alicante, Tempranillo and Grau Black.
After years of research efforts, implementation of new technologies and modernization of the production process, has gotten Valdeorras wines are among the best in Spain and exported to five continents.
Today, the responsibility for developing our wines rests registered wineries in the Control Board: are men and women who run them who have managed to combine tradition and modernity secular to maintain and guarantee the origin and quality of wines that are the ultimate expression of the mind of a land.
