In 1878 a wine made in Baños de Rioja won a prize in the wine competition of the Universal Exposition in Paris. It was presented by Eugenia de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III and Empress of France. The Empress owned a unique vineyard estate located in La Rioja, whose qualitative potential was already recognized then.
