The Cigales Designation of Origin began to function as such in 1991, a youth, however misleading, because according to documentary evidence, vineyard owners appear in the 10th century in different municipalities of the region such as Cubillas or Corcos.

Cigales wines achieved great fame in Spain and abroad. When the phylloxera invaded the French vineyards, the Cigales wines came to Bordeaux to supply their own in Gallic lands.

Of the importance that this wine-growing area had in the past, suffice it to say that in 1888 it already produced more than 15 million kilos of grapes.

The Cigales region that protects the Denomination of Origin, extends through the northern sector of the Depression of the Duero, covering an area of 574 km2, on both banks of the Pisuerga river.

The vineyards are located at an average altitude of 750 meters and range from part of the municipality of Valladolid (Pago "El Berrocal"), to the Palencia town of Dueñas, also including Cabezón de Pisuerga, Cigales, Corcos del Valle, Cubillas de Santa Marta , Fuensaldaña, Mucientes, Quintanilla de Trigueros, San Martín de Valvení, Trigueros del Valle and Valoria la Buena.
